fter a month-long journey from Switzerland, PlanetSolar II has finally reached its destination. Transported last week from the port of Matarani to the shores of Lake Titicaca in Puno, the solar-powered vessel was successfully launched into the world’s highest navigable lake.
The occasion was marked by a moving official ceremony, celebrating both the start of a new scientific expedition and the symbolic donation of the boat to the Binational Authority of Lake Titicaca (ALT). The event brought together high-level representatives from both Peruvian and Bolivian authorities, as well as the Swiss Ambassador to Bolivia, Mrs. Maja Messmer Mokhtar.
Outfitted with a data logger and sonar, PlanetSolar II will collect valuable data on the performance of its solar panels at an altitude of 3,800 meters—dramatically higher than the 400 meters at Lake Neuchâtel. It will also contribute to monitoring the fragile and threatened ecosystem of Lake Titicaca. The mission is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
